A little extra income, a few minutes a day, leaving reviews or clicking on products. Payment per task, daily payout. The first payments do arrive, small but reliable. Only after that does the system change, and according to a fixed pattern.

Task scams are among the fastest-growing forms of cryptocurrency-related fraud. They primarily target not investors, but people seeking extra income: students, those on parental leave, and part-time workers. The amounts involved are initially small, and the final sums rarely reach a significant level.

Crypto Investigation now sees these cases regularly. This article describes the typical process, explains why a payout never occurs, and shows what traces can still be followed after a payment.

The most important information at a glance

Entry point: Contact via messenger or job portals, allegedly on behalf of a well-known brand or agency.

Lure: The initial payouts are genuine. They cost little and create the trust upon which everything else is built.

Turning point: A task suddenly creates a negative account balance, which is to be offset by a deposit.

Payment method: A stablecoin is almost always required, usually USDT, often via the TRON network, payable to a changing address.

No way out: After the initial payment, further demands will follow for approvals, taxes, or salary increases. A payout is not provided.

Additional risk: Some variants use victims as a conduit for other people's money, with corresponding consequences for their own account.

Task scam: How the scheme works step by step

Contact via messenger and job portals

It starts with a message via messenger, less often a response to an application on a job portal. The sender introduces herself as an employee of an agency, frequently referencing a well-known company whose name she uses without authorization. The terms and conditions seem plausible, not exaggerated. This is precisely what distinguishes it from classic investment scams.

The onboarding process on the fake task platform

You gain access to a platform with its own dashboard, task list, and balance indicator. The tasks are trivial: rating products, clicking on apps, confirming hotel offers. A small amount is credited for each task. Often, there's a group with other participants who share payment receipts and answer questions. Most of these participants are part of the perpetrators.

The first real payout as bait

After a day or two, you request a withdrawal, and it works. The amount is small, but it arrives. From this point on, the platform is considered verified. This withdrawal is the perpetrators' main investment and the reason why later warning signs are overlooked.

The turning point: negative account balance and additional payment

Eventually, a higher-value task appears, often referred to as a combination task or special assignment. After completing it, the account balance is negative. The explanation given is that the task value exceeded the available balance and must be settled before the task can be completed and the winnings released. A deposit is required, almost always in a stablecoin.

The escalation: ever new fees and approvals.

After the first additional payment, another one follows. Sometimes another combination task has accumulated, sometimes a level increase is missing, sometimes a tax, a processing fee, or a security deposit is due. The displayed balance continues to grow, and that's precisely what keeps the process going. No payout occurs because it was never intended.

Why stablecoins like USDT are demanded in task scams

The payment request is almost always in USDT, often via the TRON network. From the perpetrator's perspective, there are good reasons for this: the transfer is fast and cheap, the value doesn't fluctuate, and many victims buy the funds beforehand on a regulated exchange, which makes the process appear even more legitimate.

For fraud investigations, this is mixed news. On the one hand, such transactions are fully and permanently traceable. On the other hand, the funds usually move quickly through several intermediaries. Why this particular network dominates fraud cases and how tracing works there is a separate topic that we will address separately.

Important to know: With stablecoins, in certain situations, the issuer may freeze holdings. This requires timely, well-documented notification and doesn't work in every case, but it's a reason to act quickly.

Recognizing task scams: the most important warning signs

Some characteristics are present in almost every case. A legitimate business never requires payment to receive compensation. A negative account balance from a task makes no sense in a genuine employment relationship. An employer does not pay a salary in cryptocurrency to a constantly changing address.

Furthermore, there are: contact exclusively via messenger, no verifiable legal notice, a website registered only a few weeks ago, groups with conspicuously uniform success stories, and the request not to mention the side income to third parties. Anyone asked to forward money received from strangers is not being used as an employee, but rather as a conduit.

When a supposed side job turns into a money laundering role

One variation of the task scam targets not only your deposits but your entire account. The task then involves receiving incoming payments, keeping a portion as a commission, and forwarding the rest, often in cryptocurrency. This is justified by claims of billing processes, test payments, or alleged work as a payment assistant.

In reality, these incoming payments almost always originate from other victims. Your account becomes a conduit, and the money trail initially ends with you for the investigating authorities. The consequences are concrete: account freezes, demands for repayment from the transferring banks, and in many cases, an investigation on suspicion of money laundering.

If this affects you, the first rule is to stop forwarding any further payments, even if money has already been received. Document all instructions you received verbatim, as they prove you were misled about the purpose of the payment. Actively inform your bank instead of waiting for it to be blocked, and file a police report. Seek legal counsel before speaking to any authorities.

This situation is unpleasant, but it's common and usually resolvable. The crucial point is that you can fully document the sequence of events and that you disclose the facts proactively, rather than waiting. We describe how those affected end up in this situation and what the consequences are in our article on account suspensions following crypto fraud.

After paying into a task scam: What's possible now

Stop making any further payments, even if a high balance is displayed. This balance is a number on a website that belongs to the perpetrators. Every additional payment will only increase their losses.

Next, save everything that documents the process: the complete chat history, the platform's address spelled out exactly, screenshots of the dashboard and task list, the exact wording of the payment requests, and all transaction IDs of your payments, including date, time, and amount. Also, note which exchange you used to purchase the funds.

File a police report with this information. Simultaneously inform the exchange where you purchased the funds. And have your payments investigated. Especially in task scams, many victims' deposits often originate from the same addresses, making it easier to trace the operation.

Task scam: Have payments forensically traced

You made a payment in connection with a supposed job offer and don't know if anything can still be done about it? We track the payments, check if the recipient addresses are known from other cases, and tell you if there is a concrete connection.

Use the form for the free initial assessment on our website. Please have the transaction IDs and recipient addresses ready.

FAQ: Crypto Payment Task Scam

What is a task scam?

A form of fraud where victims are paid for small tasks until a task results in a negative account balance. This balance is then supposedly offset by a deposit. Afterward, further demands are made, but no payment is ever made.

Why did I actually receive money at the beginning?

Because the initial payment is a sign of trust, upon which everything else is built. It costs the perpetrators little and ensures that significantly larger sums are subsequently deposited.

Is my displayed balance genuine?

No. This is an advertisement on a website controlled by the perpetrators. There is no real value behind it. Any further payment for the alleged release will only increase the damage.

Why is USDT always required?

Because the transfer is fast and inexpensive, the value doesn't fluctuate, and the prior purchase on a regulated exchange lends legitimacy to the transaction. The TRON network is frequently used.

Can I get my payments back?

A confirmed transaction cannot be reversed. Opportunities exist where the trail leads to a provider or where a stablecoin issuer can freeze holdings. Both require swift and well-documented action.

Should I contact the platform again?

No. Further contact will almost always only lead to new demands for alleged releases or taxes. End the contact and instead secure the evidence.

What if I received money from strangers and forwarded it?

The task then became using you as a conduit. This can lead to account freezes and criminal proceedings against you. Clarify the situation quickly and seek legal counsel.

How can I recognize such offers in advance?

One characteristic stands out above all: you never pay for any actual work to receive your compensation. In addition, contact is only via messenger, there's no legal notice, the website is very new, and there are groups with identical success stories.

Is it worth filing a report for smaller amounts?

Yes. These cases almost always belong to larger networks. Every report with specific addresses and transaction identifiers improves the overall picture and the chance that legal proceedings will be initiated.

What should I have ready for an analysis?

All transaction identifiers including date, time and amount, recipient addresses, the name of the exchange through which you purchased the funds, the chat history and screenshots of the platform.

Further articles on this topic: How to recognize crypto fraud, Telegram crypto fraud, Freeze USDT and USDC, Account blocked due to suspected money laundering as well as How to properly file a criminal complaint.

Note: This article is for general information purposes only and does not replace legal advice in individual cases.
