It is a Layer 1 blockchain with proof-of-stake consensus and a sharding architecture that enables high transaction throughput. The network's native token is Toncoin (TON). It serves as fuel for transactions (gas), to secure the network through staking, and increasingly as a means of payment within the Telegram application.

The unique feature compared to other Layer 1 blockchains such as Solana or Polygon The key lies not primarily in the technology, but in the distribution: TON is directly integrated into the daily lives of around one billion people via the Telegram app. Anyone who uses Telegram – whether consciously or not – already has some point of contact with the TON ecosystem.

The story of TON: From SEC halt to Telegram takeover in 2026

The story of TON is one of the most interesting twists in the crypto industry.

2018 – Announcement and ICO. Telegram first announced the project and raised approximately $1.7 billion from institutional and private investors in one of the largest Initial Coin Offerings in history. The planned token was then called "Gram".

2020 – SEC halt. The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) classified the token issuance as an unregistered securities offering. Telegram lost the case, had to halt the issuance, and return a large portion of the funds to investors. Officially, Telegram withdrew from the project.

2020 to 2024 – Community takeover. The open-source code was developed by an independent community of developers under the umbrella of the TON Foundation continued. The current network – including the renamed token – was created during this phase. Toncoin.

From 2023 onwards – a gradual return of Telegram. Telegram began to deeply integrate TON-based products into the app: the @wallet as an integrated crypto wallet, the Ad Platform with Toncoin payment, Telegram Stars as in-app currency, and Mini Apps as Web3 applications within the messenger.

May 2026 – Telegram takes over operational leadership. On May 4, 2026, Pavel Durov publicly announced that Telegram would replace the TON Foundation as the driving force behind the blockchain and become the largest validator itself. This marked the end of the period of nominal community leadership; the economic reality of the past years was formally implemented.

What is Toncoin (TON) used for today?

Unlike many Layer 1 blockchains that are still searching for a genuine user base, TON has a very clear functional structure. Seven application areas will define the ecosystem in 2026:

Telegram Ads. Advertising on the Telegram platform is paid for exclusively in Toncoin. Telegram channel owners also receive their revenue share in TON. This creates a structured, not a speculative, cycle between advertising purchases and payouts.

Telegram Stars. Stars are a digital in-app currency that users can purchase with Apple Pay, Google Pay, or a card and spend in mini-apps, channels, or on digital goods. Stars themselves don't exist on the blockchain, but Creators can exchange their Stars balances for Toncoin via the official dashboard.. This makes Telegram one of the largest fiat-to-crypto onramps worldwide.

@wallet (Telegram Wallet). A wallet integrated directly into Telegram that supports TON, USDT on TON and other assets. Important limitation: This wallet is custodial. – The private keys are stored with Telegram, not with the user. This has security and forensic implications, which we will discuss shortly.

Mini Apps. Embedded Web3 applications that run directly within the messenger. TON has been the exclusive blockchain infrastructure for mini apps with blockchain capabilities since 2025.

TON Connect. Standardized wallet connection protocol – the technical counterpart to WalletConnect in the Ethereum universe.

USDT on TON. The Tether stablecoin also exists as a jetton on the TON blockchain. For many users, this is the preferred way to pay in dollar-stable values without the high fees associated with Ethereum.

NFTs, Gifts, Channels. Stickers, gifts, and channel ownership are increasingly being represented as on-chain assets on TON.

Technical specifications

The TON blockchain was built for performance. Key technical features:

Consensus: Proof of Stake with validator staking

Architecture: Dynamic sharding – the network automatically divides into shards to distribute load.

Smart Contracts: in TVM bytecode, languages such as FunC and Tact

Token Standard: Jettons (comparable to ERC-20) and NFT standards

Transaction volume Q1 2026: approximately 1.5 billion transactions

Roadmap 2026: Catchain 2.0 with near-instant finality (sub-second), Rust-based validator nodes

Overall, TON is technically competitive with networks like Solana and significantly faster than the Ethereum mainchain. However, its real competitive advantage still lies in the Telegram distribution.

How does one acquire Toncoin – and what should investors pay attention to?

There are several ways to acquire Toncoin in 2026:

Directly in Telegram @wallet. The integrated wallet allows you to buy, hold, and send TON and USDT within the app. Advantage: maximum convenience. Disadvantage: custodial – Telegram holds the keys. Not recommended for larger holdings.

Via regulated cryptocurrency exchanges. Toncoin is listed on almost all major exchanges, including Binance, Bybit, and Kraken., OKX, Coinbase and MEXC. For EU investors, since MiCAR (Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation), it is crucial that the exchange used has the appropriate EU authorization.

About non-custodial wallets. Tonkeeper, Tangem, OneKey or Ledger support TON. This option means: You hold the keys yourself, but are also responsible for their secure storage.

Those who wish to invest larger amounts in Toncoin should consider two points: First Diversification – TON is strongly linked to Telegram's business development; if Telegram comes under regulatory pressure (for example after the proceedings against Pavel Durov in France in 2024), this directly affects the share price. Secondly The custody question – anyone who permanently leaves TON in their @wallet accepts that Telegram manages the keys and therefore also has access and blocking options.

TON from a forensic perspective: Opportunities and pitfalls

From the perspective of crypto forensics and asset recovery, TON has a clear profile. There are aspects that are particularly helpful forensic investigations – and others that require more work.

Forensic advantages:

Public blockchain. All TON transactions can be viewed using block explorers such as Tonviewer or Tonscan. Traces of stolen or fraudulently obtained coins can generally be tracked.

Tool support. Forensic platforms like Crystal Intelligence and MetaSleuth support TON addresses and tokens. This enables professional Blockchain analytics also in the TON ecosystem.

Custodial @wallet. Since Telegram holds the keys to the @wallet, a Data request to Telegram via law enforcement agencies a real lever to identify wallet holders – similar to a crypto exchange.

USDT Freezing. Tether can technically block USDT addresses on TON. This has happened in several documented cases and represents one of the most effective leverage in case of damage more on this in our article on Stablecoin blocks by Tether and Circle.

Forensic stumbling blocks:

Address formats. TON uses different address formats (raw, bounceable, non-bounceable, EQ/UQ prefixes). Anyone unfamiliar with the differences might mistakenly compare two "different" addresses that actually belong to the same wallet.

Tokens instead of native tokens. USDT, USDC, and other tokens on TON are not native coins, but rather smart contract-based tokens. Cluster analysis must take this into account.

Mini Apps as a Black Box. Applications running within Telegram are less transparent to the outside world than traditional DApps. Backend servers, smart contract calls, and user flows must be cleanly reconstructed.

Custodial wallet movements. Transactions within Telegram's custodial wallet are not necessarily visible on-chain – off-chain transactions between users remain invisible to external forensics until funds leave the platform.

TON and crypto fraud: What users should know

TON itself is not a "fraudulent" blockchain – but its reach via Telegram makes the ecosystem one. preferred location for crypto scams. From our client inquiries, we have identified four recurring patterns in which Toncoin or USDT on TON play a role:

Telegram groups with fake traders. Alleged "signal groups" or "VIP trader channels" advertise high profits. Deposits are made via the @wallet in TON or USDT-on-TON. More information can be found in our article. Telegram crypto fraud.

Pig Butchering via Telegram. A classic approach involving long-term relationship building, followed by a request for investment via a TON-based mini-app or an external platform with Toncoin deposits. We describe how this scam works in detail in our article. Pig Butchering Scam.

Fake mini-apps. Applications running in messengers that supposedly offer yield farming or mining and deny access after a deposit – a similar pattern to classic cloud mining scams.

Recovery scams in the TON context. After an initial loss, victims are contacted via Telegram channels by alleged "recovery services." You can read how to recognize these services in our article. Crypto Fraud Recovery Scam.

The key distinction in the evaluation is this: TON itself isn't the problem; rather, the platform distribution makes scam operations particularly efficient. Anyone with suspicions should... Wallet check Order it early – before the next payment, not after the damage has occurred.

Conclusion: Toncoin as a mainstream crypto with forensic implications

The existing article about TON is outdated – and in several respects. The cryptocurrency is no longer called Gram, Telegram hasn't abandoned the project, and TON is no longer an experimental playground. By 2026, Toncoin will be the financial backing of a messenger with around one billion monthly active users. This makes TON one of the most relevant blockchains in existence.

For investors, this means high structural demand, clear use cases (ads, stars, wallet, mini apps), but also a dependence on Telegram as the central platform. For crypto forensics, it means: TON traces are very easy to follow on-chain, Telegram's custodial @wallet opens up additional points of contact, and USDT freezing is a real lever in the event of a loss.

If you have fallen victim to a suspected crypto scam via Telegram, the @wallet, or a TON mini-app, securing evidence early is crucial: wallet addresses, transaction IDs, chat histories, and mini-app names. Contact us – via the Wallet check You will receive an initial forensic assessment, and our Crypto forensics services cover the subsequent securing of evidence up to and including the accompaniment of the Criminal charges from.

Is Telegram's cryptocurrency still called "Gram"?

No. Gram was the token originally planned for 2018/2019, but its issuance was halted in 2020 following the SEC proceedings.
